St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Narol Incorporated
Overview

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of Narol Incorporated is a Canadian nonprofit organization located in Narol, Manitoba. It is a part of the broader Orthodox Christian community and serves as a spiritual home for those in the region.

History

The church was founded in 1911 by immigrants from the Brody area in Galicia, who were predominantly of Rusin/Western Ukrainian background. Initially, these pioneers were Greek Catholic but returned to their Orthodox roots after arriving in Canada, affiliating with the Russian Orthodox Mission. Over time, the church became an integral part of the Archdiocese of Canada within the Orthodox Church in America.

Physical Structure and Development

The church was constructed shortly after its establishment and features a simple, oblong-shaped wooden building. A belfry was also built adjacent to the church, with a nearby area designated for a cemetery. The construction was undertaken by members of the parish and local residents.

Liturgical Practices

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church conducts services entirely in English, following the New Calendar. Regular services include Saturday evening Vespers and Sunday morning Divine Liturgy. Festal weekday services are also offered, maintaining traditional Orthodox liturgical customs adapted from Western Ukrainian Orthodox practices.

Community and Growth

Under the leadership of past priest, Father Robert Kennaugh, the church transitioned to an entirely English liturgy, which has been beneficial for the diverse community. Following Father Kennaugh's retirement, Father Gregory Scratch was appointed, marking a significant shift towards full-time priestly service. This change contributed to the church's growth and its appeal to young families and converts to Orthodoxy.

Unique Features

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is notable as the only Orthodox Church outside Winnipeg's city limits in Manitoba that offers consistent Sunday services. This makes it a vital spiritual center for those living in the surrounding areas. The church's inclusive environment and English liturgy have helped attract and retain a diverse congregation.
