HALIFAX INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS (ISKCON HALIFAX)
Halifax International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON Halifax)
Halifax International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON Halifax) is a Canadian nonprofit organization and registered charity dedicated to the practice and dissemination of Krishna Consciousness based on the teachings of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The organization operates in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business number 832429815RR0001[1][2].
History and Background
ISKCON Halifax initially flourished between 2007 and 2010 under the leadership of Bhaktimarga Swami along with key members including Nitairama Dasa, Brihat Mridanga Dasa, Yogendra Dasa, Sundarilila Devi Dasi, and Dr. Sankar. During this period, they conducted various spiritual programs in downtown Halifax[3].
In 2010, the main brahmacharis transitioned to Montreal for further training, and the community continued independently until 2012, when they established a rural ashram with support from Dr. Jala. However, following the dissolution of the ashram, ISKCON Halifax became dormant and was sustained by a core group of devotees alongside the registered charity foundation[3].
A significant revival began in 2018 under the guidance of Bhaktimarga Swami, Mangalananda Dasa, and Ambarisa Dasa. Their leadership led to the resurgence of the community through active engagement, public festivals, and Sunday programs. This revival culminated in the acquisition of Atlantic Canada’s first ISKCON temple, a 7,700 square foot property situated on nine acres of land, marking a new era of growth and vibrancy for ISKCON Halifax[3].
Mission and Activities
The organization’s primary mission is to systematically propagate spiritual knowledge related to Krishna Consciousness and to educate society at large in the techniques of spiritual life. This mission aims to foster spiritual growth and awareness, promoting the teachings of bhakti-yoga and devotional service according to the traditions of ISKCON[1].
ISKCON Halifax conducts regular spiritual programs, public festivals, and Sunday gatherings which serve both educational and devotional purposes. These activities foster a strong community presence and provide spiritual support to devotees and interested individuals in the Halifax region and beyond[3].
Organizational Status
ISKCON Halifax is officially recognized as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency, ensuring compliance with national regulations and enabling transparent fundraising efforts. Donations to the organization support its mission and community activities, providing donors with tax receipt benefits under Canadian law[2].
ISKCON Halifax represents an important center for Krishna Consciousness practice and outreach in Eastern Canada, combining a rich history, community-focused programs, and now a dedicated temple space to serve its devotees and the wider public.
