KAMLOOPS JAPANESE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION

Kamloops Japanese Canadian Association
Introduction

The Kamloops Japanese Canadian Association (KJCA) is a nonprofit organization founded in December 1976. It serves as a social and cultural entity with the mission of fostering community among its members, engaging in activities that benefit the local community, and promoting Japanese Canadian heritage.

History and Purpose

Formed during the preparations for the Centennial celebrations of the first Japanese person to arrive in Canada (Manzo Nagano in 1877), the KJCA was officially incorporated under the Societies Act of BC on January 18, 1980. The organization received charitable status in November of the same year. Its purpose is to support cultural activities and community welfare by organizing various events and programs.

Activities and Programs

The KJCA offers a wide range of activities aimed at preserving Japanese culture and community engagement. This includes:

  • Cultural Events: Hosting events such as Children's Day celebrations, taiko drumming performances, and traditional cooking classes.
  • Community Outreach: Participating in multicultural festivals and organizing community gatherings like the Keirokai party for seniors and Christmas parties for children.
  • Educational Initiatives: Offering Japanese language classes, crafting groups, and preschool playgroups.
  • Multicultural Participation: The organization is a founding member of the Kamloops Multicultural Society and actively participates in Folkfest and Canada Day celebrations.
Structural Role in the Community

The KJCA operates the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, which serves as a central hub for many of its social and cultural activities. It plays a significant role in preserving Japanese Canadian history and culture within the Kamloops community.

Community Impact

The KJCA's efforts have been instrumental in fostering a sense of community among Japanese Canadians in Kamloops. By promoting cultural heritage through diverse activities, the organization contributes to the understanding and appreciation of Japanese Canadian history within the broader Canadian context.
