Overview

Holy Cross Anglican Church is a Canadian nonprofit organization located in Calgary, Alberta. It was formed through the amalgamation of two formerly separate Anglican parishes: St. Michael and All Angels and St. Cyprian[1][3].

History

The history of Holy Cross Anglican Church dates back to the early days of its predecessors. St. Michael and All Angels was established in 1909, while St. Cyprian also had a long-standing history in the community. However, as part of Calgary's urban development, St. Michael and All Angels Church was slated for demolition due to the widening of 16 Avenue NW. This led to discussions about merging the parishes in the Banff Trail area[3].

In 1997, following a successful vote among parishioners (277 to 6 in favor), the amalgamation of the two parishes was officially completed. All activities of St. Michael's Parish were moved to St. Cyprian's Church building. The St. Michael building was subsequently sold to the City of Calgary and demolished in 2003[3].

Naming and Identity

In 1998, a new name for the unified parish was chosen. From a list of 47 suggestions, the name "Holy Cross Anglican Church" was selected. This name was endorsed by Archbishop J. Barry Curtis, who noted that the cross symbolizes the union of two separate entities into a whole and holy entity[3].

Community Activities

Holy Cross Anglican Church hosts various community events, including a May Strawberry Tea, a Candy Cane Bazaar in November, a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner, and a Soup and Bread Lunch to support charitable causes like the Primate's World Relief Development Fund[3].
