Shakespeare by the Sea Festival Inc.
Shakespeare by the Sea Festival Inc. (registered charity No. 891781841RR0001) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to producing theatrical works, particularly those of William Shakespeare, and fostering artistic development. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, it operates as the longest-running outdoor summer theatre event in the St. John's area[2][3].
History
Founded in 1993 by Aiden Flynn and Danielle Irvine, the festival initially focused on staging Shakespearean works outdoors. Jennifer (Jenn) Deon served as artistic director from 1995 to 2014, followed by Ian Campbell (2015–2017) and Paul Rowe (2018 onward). In 2018, the organization introduced its first general manager, Sandra Mills[3]. Mallory Fisher assumed the artistic director role in 2021[3].
The festival expanded its repertoire to include works highlighting Newfoundland and Labrador's culture, such as The Curious Case in the Colony by local playwright Chris Hibbs, which reimagines Sherlock Holmes in the historic colony[3]. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 season featured virtual performances, including a reading of Pericles: Prince of Tyre and recorded Shakespeare Shorts. Live performances resumed in 2021 with a reimagined production of Pericles[3].
Activities
The festival runs annually during July and August, staging performances at outdoor venues across St. John's[3]. It emphasizes accessibility and community engagement, blending professional and emerging talent. Alongside Shakespearean classics, it commissions local works and collaborates with artists like storyteller Kelly Russell[3].
Organizational Structure
As a registered charity and member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association and the Institute of Outdoor Drama, the organization prioritizes artistic excellence and audience development[3]. Its dual mandate includes cultivating theatre audiences and supporting artists at all career stages[1][3].
