Chevra Kadisha of Calgary
Overview
The Chevra Kadisha of Calgary is a nonprofit organization and the oldest Jewish communal entity in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1904 and incorporated in 1914. The organization's primary objective is to provide Jewish burial services, maintaining a long-standing tradition of dignity and respect for the deceased, as well as offering comfort to the bereaved.
History
The Chevra Kadisha was formed in response to the death of an infant, Goldie Bell, in Calgary. At that time, the Jewish community in Calgary was small. Nathan Bell, the child's father, and Jacob Diamond initiated efforts to secure a burial plot, leading to the purchase of a small area adjacent to Union Cemetery. This plot, known as the "Hebrew Burying Ground," was extended in 1907 and 1909 as the community grew.
Following the formation of the Congregation House of Jacob in 1907, the Chevra Kadisha continued its operations under the synagogue's committee. By 1914, it had become an independent society, with Charles Malkin as its first president. Over time, the organization expanded its services and facilities. In 1943, it took over the management of a Jewish section in Queen’s Park Cemetery, and by 1961, it had opened its own funeral chapel.
Services and Activities
The Chevra Kadisha provides comprehensive end-of-life services, including the ritual preparation of the deceased, known as Tahara, and the organization of memorial services. These activities are conducted in accordance with Jewish law and tradition, ensuring that all members of the Jewish community receive dignified burial services, regardless of their level of religious observance.
The organization also maintains and oversees the perpetual care of Jewish cemeteries in Calgary, ensuring that these sacred spaces are preserved for future generations.
Financial and Community Support
As a registered charity with a Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) designation, the Chevra Kadisha relies on donations to continue its mission. It does not engage in regular fundraising campaigns but welcomes financial support to assist families with burial costs and to maintain its facilities and cemetery grounds. Donations can be directed towards specific funds, such as the Financial Cost Assistance Fund or the Perpetual Care Fund, depending on the donor's preferences.
Volunteer Commitment
The Chevra Kadisha operates through the dedication of volunteers who perform acts of loving kindness, known as chesed shel emet. These acts are central to the organization's mission, ensuring that no family is denied burial services due to financial constraints.
In summary, the Chevra Kadisha of Calgary is a commendable example of community service and religious dedication, providing essential support to the Jewish community in Calgary while upholding ancient traditions with compassion and dignity.
