WATSON'S MILL MANOTICK INCORPORATED

Watson's Mill Manotick Incorporated

Watson's Mill Manotick Incorporated (Business Registration Number: 876673161RR0001) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and operating Watson's Mill, a historic 1860s water-powered flour and gristmill located in Manotick, Ontario. The organization manages the mill as a working heritage site and museum, maintaining one of the few operational industrial grist mills in North America.

History

Founded in 1860 by Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Merrill Currier as the Long Island Milling Enterprise, Watson's Mill was established along the shores of the Rideau River to take advantage of water power from the Rideau Canal system. The mill served as an important industrial facility in the region, producing stone-ground whole wheat flour and other milled products.

In 1946, the mill was acquired by Harry Watson, from whom the site derives its current name. Watson was the last owner to operate the mill commercially. In 1972, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority purchased the mill, transitioning it into a museum. Subsequently, in 2008, Watson's Mill Manotick Incorporated became the owner and steward of the property, focusing on its preservation and educational mission.

Operations and Activities

Watson's Mill Manotick Incorporated operates the mill as a working museum that demonstrates traditional milling techniques using the original machinery and millstones. Its milling demonstrations are regularly held, particularly on Sundays during the warmer months, allowing visitors to witness the process of grinding wheat into flour.

The site also includes the Dickinson House, built in 1867, which served as the residence for the mill’s owners and is preserved as a heritage museum. Together with the mill and the Carriage Shed, these buildings form Dickinson Square, the historical and cultural center of Manotick Village.

Community and Cultural Significance

Watson's Mill is a prominent landmark in Manotick and serves as a symbol of the village's history and heritage. The mill's image is often used to represent the community. The organization hosts a variety of events and supports cultural activities, including seasonal celebrations and educational programs.

The mill is also noted for local folklore, including stories of a ghost named Annabelle, believed to be the spirit of Ann Currier, who died in a tragic accident on the site in 1861, adding to its cultural allure.

Visitor Information

Watson's Mill is open to the public primarily from May through October, with guided tours and milling demonstrations available. Visitors can explore all four levels of the mill, enjoy walking trails along the Rideau River, and learn about local history through costumed interpreters.

Entry to the site is typically by donation, and the nonprofit organization maintains a gift shop and other amenities to enhance the visitor experience.

Watson's Mill Manotick Incorporated plays a vital role in preserving an important piece of Canadian industrial and cultural history through active operation, education, and community engagement.
