The Comber and District Historical Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the historical heritage of the Comber region in Ontario. It manages the Comber & District Historical Society Museum, which serves as a cultural repository and educational center for local history.
History and Background
The museum, originally known as the Tilbury West Museum, is housed in the former Maple Grove Public School building (S.S. #8), constructed in 1884. The museum was officially opened in 1967 as a Centennial Project to commemorate Canadian heritage. In 1998, ownership of the museum was transferred to the Comber and District Historical Society, which currently oversees its operations through a board comprised of local residents including a President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary Treasurer, and several directors.
Museum and Collections
Located approximately 4 kilometers south of Comber on Highway 77, the museum showcases a wide array of artifacts reflecting the region's historical lifestyle and industries. The collection includes items such as magneto telephones, farm machinery, household articles, medical equipment, school memorabilia, military artifacts, carpentry tools, and materials related to local government.
The museum’s goal is to preserve the area’s cultural heritage by maintaining these artifacts and providing educational exhibits that depict "Life in Pioneer Days." The displays highlight various aspects of the community’s past, providing visitors with an insightful look into the local history.
Memorial Forest
Adjacent to the museum is the Memorial Forest, a dedicated space where trees are planted in memory of loved ones by families and friends. This living memorial complements the society’s mission of preservation and remembrance within the community.
Organizational Structure and Purpose
The Comber and District Historical Society operates as a nonprofit entity with the purpose of maintaining and preserving the museum and Memorial Forest, thereby safeguarding the heritage of the Comber district region for future generations.
This overview encapsulates the society’s contributions to historical preservation and community education through its museum and heritage programs.
