Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation
The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) is a Canadian-registered charity and non-profit society, established in 1993. Its mission is centered around the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife in Alberta. Located on Treaty 7 land, AIWC acknowledges its responsibility to care for the land and its inhabitants, honoring its position within the traditional territory of several Indigenous nations, including the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuut’ina, Stoney/Îyârhe Nakoda, and the people of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
Mission and Operations
AIWC operates as an accredited veterinary hospital through the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, ensuring a high standard of care for its wildlife patients. As of its founding, AIWC has admitted over 37,000 animals into care. The organization's activities are funded entirely by donations, reflecting its reliance on community support for its operations.
AIWC promotes environmental protection through engaging public education programs aimed at all age groups. These programs emphasize the importance of wildlife in the ecosystem and everyday life. The institute is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA), fostering an environment of respect and safety for everyone involved.
Staff and Volunteers
The AIWC operates with a team of nine full-time staff members, part-time staff, and over 115 volunteers. Additionally, the organization has more than 250 active memberships, which provide crucial support to its mission. The busiest seasons for animal care are spring and summer, reflecting the natural cycles of wildlife activity.
Community Impact
As a champion for wildlife conservation, AIWC plays a vital role in Alberta's wildlife rehabilitation efforts. Its work not only supports individual animals in need but also contributes to broader conservation goals by educating the public about the importance of wildlife and environmental stewardship. Through its commitment to these principles, AIWC reinforces its position as a valued community asset dedicated to preserving and protecting Alberta's wildlife and their habitats.
