The Sharing Farm Society
The Sharing Farm Society is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to addressing food insecurity in Richmond, British Columbia. It operates as a community farm, where food is grown and distributed to families in need.
Mission
The mission of The Sharing Farm Society is to provide fresh, healthy, locally grown produce to community members facing food insecurity. This is achieved through the efforts of over 1,000 volunteers annually and a dedicated core of part-time staff.
Operations
The Society began by collecting surplus fruits to donate to the Richmond Food Bank and has evolved into a larger operation, currently cultivating 4 to 5 acres of land. This includes areas in the Terra Nova Rural Park and an orchard in south Richmond. Throughout the growing season, their produce reaches up to 2,200 people weekly, supporting community meals and local food banks.
Impact
In 2023, The Sharing Farm donated 26,825 pounds of produce to organizations such as the Richmond Food Bank, Musqueam Nation, and Richmond Family Place, among others. These efforts not only provide essential nutrition but also foster community connections and learning opportunities.
Structure
The Sharing Farm Society is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency. Despite operating on a modest budget, the organization manages to make a significant impact through volunteer efforts and community support.
Goals
Beyond providing essential produce, The Sharing Farm aims to grow farmers, promoting agricultural knowledge and skills within the community. It also focuses on growing community, enhancing social bonds through shared responsibilities and outcomes.
