Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club
Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club (SLSC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to sailing education and recreational sailing activities. Founded in 1956, the club has a long history of providing sailing instruction to youth and fostering a community centered around boating, sportsmanship, and outdoor enjoyment.
History
SLSC was established by a group of dedicated individuals with a vision to create a welcoming environment for learning and enjoying the sport of sailing on Sturgeon Lake. Over more than six decades, the club has continued to evolve while maintaining its core values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and skill development. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006, marking a milestone of half a century of boating tradition and community involvement.
Programs
The club offers the Sail Canada CANSail curriculum, a nationally recognized sailing program for children aged 8 to 17. The main summer program runs in July and August, with daily morning sessions from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. These programs cater to various skill levels, teaching basic sailing and racing techniques alongside character-building attributes such as confidence, perseverance, and teamwork.
For more advanced sailors, SLSC provides a Race Team program that operates on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. This offering is divided into two levels: Learn to Race and Senior Race Team, enabling participants to hone competitive racing skills in a structured environment.
Events
A key annual event hosted by the club is the Civic Regatta, held during the Civic Long Weekend. This regatta features competitive racing and has a storied history with multiple trophies awarded over the years. The event showcases the club’s ongoing commitment to sailing competition as well as community participation on Sturgeon Lake.
Health and Safety
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SLSC has implemented protocols aligned with guidance from the Government of Ontario, Sail Canada, and Ontario Sailing. These measures are updated as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, staff, and visitors.
Community and Legacy
SLSC remains a cornerstone of the local community, nurturing a friendly atmosphere where young people can learn sailing skills and good sportsmanship. The club’s sustained commitment to these principles has helped it serve hundreds of children each summer, fostering a lifelong appreciation for sailing and outdoor recreation.
