Overview
The Camp Ahshunyoong Corporation is a Canadian nonprofit organisation registered with the Canada Revenue Agency, operating as a charitable organization. Initially known as Ahshunyoong, which translates to "bright" or "shining" in the Ojibwa language, the camp has a rich history dating back to its origins in 1931. Originally situated at Duclos Point on Lake Simcoe, it was organized by the York County Boys' Work Board.
History
The camp has undergone several relocations due to challenges such as an unbearable mosquito population and transportation issues. It moved to Georgina Island, then to Sibbald's Point, and finally to McRae Beach on Lake Simcoe in 1946. In 1965, the ownership was transferred to the Toronto United Church Council, leading to the incorporation as a not-for-profit organization.
Operations
Camp Ahshunyoong Corporation offers a Christian-based overnight summer camp experience for children and youth, featuring both outdoor and indoor programming. The camp aims to provide a vibrant and impactful experience, focusing on activities that promote personal growth and community building.
Connection to Camp Big Canoe
Historically, Camp Ahshunyoong is deeply connected to what is now known as Camp Big Canoe. This connection highlights the evolution of the camp over the years, with its legacy continuing under different names and locations.
