Erin Agricultural Society
The Erin Agricultural Society (EAS) is a registered nonprofit organization in Canada, recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency with the registration number 125806620RR0001. Established in 1850, it has been a cornerstone of the community in and around Erin, Ontario.
History and Mandate
Originally sponsored by the Canadian government during the mid-19th century, the EAS was part of a broader effort to improve agricultural practices and prosperity among farmers. Today, the society's mission revolves around promoting awareness and education about agriculture, farming, and rural life.
Activities and Events
One of the EAS's most notable endeavors is the annual Erin Fair, which takes place over Thanksgiving weekend. The fair features a variety of events, including a midway, entertainment options, children's activities, tractor pulls, and agricultural exhibits. The fair serves as a community gathering point and aims to educate visitors about agriculture.
Community Involvement
The Erin Fair is supported by local businesses, residents, farmers, and agricultural organizations. The event fosters a sense of community by involving volunteers from the area and providing a platform for showcasing local agricultural achievements. Additionally, the society offers its grounds at reduced rates for disabled groups and admits children under 13 free of charge to encourage their interest in agriculture.
Impact
Since its inception, the EAS has played a significant role in enhancing the agricultural sector and promoting country life. Its long-standing commitment to community development has earned it recognition, with the Erin Fair being compared to larger events like the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). The fair remains a key social and educational event in the region.
