Ummah Society

The Ummah Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization recognized as the largest Muslim charity in Atlantic Canada. Established in 1989, the Society's mission is to embody the foundational Islamic institution that was first established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and early Muslim immigrants. This vision extends beyond serving as a place of worship; it aims to function as a center for knowledge, charity, community support, and social engagement for Muslims in the region.

Mission and Activities

The Ummah Society seeks to replicate the multifaceted role of the original Islamic institution by providing services that include religious worship, education, charity, shelter, and community gatherings. It operates as a hub where the Muslim community in Atlantic Canada can converge for spiritual growth, social support, and cultural celebration. The Society's programs and services emphasize education through private P-12 schools, licensed daycares, and recreational centers, thus supporting children’s development and lifelong learning.

Infrastructure and Community Impact

The Society administers three mosques across Nova Scotia, including the notable Ummah Mosque in Antigonish, which was established in 2021. This mosque serves as the first and only mosque and community center in Antigonish County, providing a spiritual sanctuary for local residents, students of St. Francis Xavier University, healthcare workers, and others. The Society also engages actively in charitable outreach, social programming, and community integration, making it a cornerstone institution for Muslim life in Atlantic Canada.

Governance

The Ummah Society is governed by a board comprising professionals from diverse fields. Key members include Ashraf Al-Zaman, Chairman and Associate Dean at Sobey School of Business; Dr. Ahmad Hussein, Vice Chairman and dentist; Mohammad Mujahid, Secretary and professor; Ahmed Nassrat, Treasurer and financial controller; and Alaa Al-Hammadi, a member with an MBA and engineering background. Their leadership supports the Society’s strategic growth and community engagement efforts.

Recognition

With nearly four decades of continuous growth and service, the Ummah Society has established itself as an influential and respected organization within Atlantic Canada. It has gained recognition for its active role in Dawah (Islamic outreach), community empowerment, and fostering positive societal relations through dialogue and media engagement.

This summary highlights the Ummah Society's key roles and contributions as a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to serving and advancing the Muslim community across Atlantic Canada.[1][2][3][5]
