FIXT POINT Arts and Media

FIXT POINT Arts and Media is a Canadian nonprofit arts and media organization dedicated to preserving local heritage and culture through storytelling. Registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business number 821048402RR0001, it operates with a mission to inspire audiences and artists to imagine change by promoting local culture across multiple platforms.

Mission and Activities

FIXT POINT aims to capture the collective community memory of Canada's main streets, one story at a time, through its flagship project, The Tale of a Town. This site-specific theatre and media project involves touring a Storymobile (a mobile recording studio) across the country to gather stories from independent business owners, local heroes, community stakeholders, and residents. These stories are then integrated into performance installations created in collaboration with local artists and presented in site-specific downtown locations.

Projects and Initiatives
  • The Tale of a Town: This project has interviewed over 3,300 Canadians in over 150 communities since its inception in 2014. The collected stories are disseminated through various media, including podcasts, performance installations, a TVO series titled Main Street Ontario, and appearances on CBC's Fresh Air.
  • Empathy Squad: FIXT POINT also facilitates community engagement through initiatives like the Empathy Squad, which focuses on listening parties and storytelling to foster empathy among participants.
  • Other Projects: Beyond The Tale of a Town, FIXT POINT produces diverse audio and multimedia projects on topics such as historical events and cultural migrations.
History and Recognition

FIXT POINT was founded in 2006 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2011. The organization was recognized as the Touring Artist of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenting Association (CAPACOA), reflecting its significant contribution to Canadian arts and culture.

Impact and Outreach

Throughout its work, FIXT POINT endeavours to be a leader in public engagement, embedding training and outreach into its creative processes. By promoting collective storytelling and preserving local heritage, the organization inspires audiences to reflect on their values and histories, fostering a sense of community and cultural appreciation across Canada.
