STICH Supper Society

STICH Supper Society (Business Registration Number: 706850088RR0001) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and social isolation through community meals and related initiatives. Founded as a grassroots movement in Ingersoll, Ontario, STICH stands for Stronger Together Ingersoll Community Harvest, reflecting its mission to bring the community together through shared food experiences and skill-building opportunities.

History and Background

STICH originated in the fall of 2015 when local citizens gathered to respond to concerns about food security in Ingersoll. The initial impetus was a rumor regarding the temporary closure of a local food supplier, which galvanized the group to take action to ensure sustained access to nutritious food within the community. Following several weeks of meetings, the organization was formally established with the goal of creating a community kitchen and supper club that would serve as a welcoming space for all residents to connect, share meals, and develop life skills such as cooking, gardening, and budgeting.

Programs and Activities

The core activity of the STICH Supper Society is hosting a weekly community meal known as the "Supper Club." Held every Thursday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church in Ingersoll, the Supper Club offers free, hot, nutritious meals to anyone in the community. The initiative aims to combat food insecurity while fostering social inclusion and reducing isolation among vulnerable populations.

Beyond meal service, STICH coordinates with local food rescue and social service organizations—such as Cycles of Life, South Gate Centre’s Food Angels, Seniors in Food Crisis, Lunch Bunch, and Operation Sharing—to acquire surplus food and distribute it effectively throughout Oxford County. A recent grant of $25,000 from the Farm Credit Corporation’s AgriSpirit Fund has supported the purchase of a van to enhance food transportation and distribution capabilities.

The organization operates entirely on community participation, with volunteers contributing to meal preparation, serving, set-up, clean-up, and mentoring, reflecting its vision as a community-run and community-driven project.

Governance

STICH Supper Society is overseen by a board of directors comprising community members committed to its mission. The board includes a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and several Directors at Large, who guide the organization in serving its community effectively.

Registration and Recognition

STICH Supper Society is a registered charity recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency. It complies with regulatory requirements to maintain its charitable status and offers tax receipts to donors, enabling efficient fundraising focused on its community service goals.

STICH Supper Society exemplifies a grassroots approach to alleviating food insecurity by intertwining mutual aid with community empowerment, striving to "stitch" the community together with shared resources, skills, and fellowship.
