Heritage Abbotsford Society
Overview

The Heritage Abbotsford Society is a registered Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the rich history and cultural heritage of Abbotsford, British Columbia. With a registered charity number issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the society is recognized for its contributions to the community through educational programs and cultural events.

Mission

The mission of the Heritage Abbotsford Society is to collect, record, preserve, and share the stories of Abbotsford. This mission is fulfilled through the operation of heritage sites and the implementation of community-focused initiatives that engage both residents and visitors in understanding the city's diverse history.

History

Originally known as the MSA Museum Society, the organization has evolved to become a central figure in preserving Abbotsford's historical narrative. The society's history is closely tied to the development of Abbotsford, particularly during the times of significant industrial and agricultural changes in the region.

Locations and Collections

The society is headquartered at the Trethewey House Heritage Site, a notable landmark built in 1919 for Joseph Ogle "J.O." Trethewey, a prominent figure in the lumber industry at the time. Trethewey House, an example of Arts and Crafts architecture, is constructed from local materials and serves as a museum showcasing historical artifacts related to Abbotsford's past. The society also manages collections at the Heritage Gallery and the Upper Sumas Train Station, boasting approximately 8,000 artifacts that highlight the city's industrial and agricultural heritage.

Activities and Programs

Heritage Abbotsford Society offers a range of activities designed to engage the community with its cultural and historical heritage. These include guided tours and educational programs tailored for all ages. The society relies on volunteers and supporters to help conduct these activities, fostering a sense of community through shared historical experiences.

Funding and Support

As a non-profit organization, the Heritage Abbotsford Society depends on donations and sponsorships from private donors, corporate sponsors, and government grants. It works collaboratively with various organizations to secure funding that supports its mission to educate and connect the public with Abbotsford's history.

Significance

The Heritage Abbotsford Society plays a crucial role in preserving the historical identity of Abbotsford by making its cultural and industrial past accessible to future generations. Through its work at historic sites and community outreach programs, the society contributes significantly to the preservation of Canadian cultural heritage.
