The Green Timbers Heritage Society

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization established in 1987 dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Green Timbers Urban Forest, Park, and the original Green Timbers Square Mile located in Surrey, British Columbia. It operates as a registered charity and is wholly volunteer-run, focusing on protecting this significant green space from urban development and commercial encroachment.

History and Purpose

The Society was formed initially to prevent the development of a football stadium within the Green Timbers forest area. In referendums held in 1988 and 1996, the community successfully opposed commercial development in parts of Green Timbers, efforts strongly supported and organized by the Society. Since then, the organization has worked in close partnership with the City of Surrey to safeguard, rehabilitate, and enhance the forest and park areas for public enjoyment and environmental sustainability. The Society’s mission extends to fostering public knowledge and awareness of urban forests and their ecological importance.

Activities and Programs

The Green Timbers Heritage Society has raised substantial funds over the years to support forest preservation activities, including trail creation and maintenance. While the original trails were constructed by volunteers, they are currently maintained by the City of Surrey to ensure high standards. The Society also manages Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership (SNAP), a collaborative program involving three environmental groups alongside the city, aimed at protecting natural areas within Surrey.

Organization and Membership

As a community-organized entity, the Society relies entirely on volunteers and welcomes members who are passionate about conserving this vital green space amidst one of Canada's fastest-growing urban centers. Membership supports the ongoing mission to preserve the forest for future generations and provides opportunities for individuals to engage directly with conservation efforts and educational activities.

Registration and Status

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is a registered nonprofit organization and charity with the business registration number 140388216RR0001. Its activities encompass civic and social advocacy related to environmental preservation within the community framework.

This summary reflects the Society's commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and urban forest conservation in Surrey, British Columbia[1][2][4].
