The Western Spiritualist Church of Universal Brotherhood Society (WSCHUBS) is a Canadian nonprofit spiritualist organization registered under the business number 892631045RR0001. Founded in March 1981 and incorporated in March 1987, it is recognized as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency.[2][4]
History and Evolution
The organization was established by the late Reverend Mary Hietanen. In 2007, Reverend Anna Beveridge became co-minister and later minister until her passing in November 2020. Reverend Mary Brooks currently serves as the minister.[2][5]
Originally known as the Western Spiritualist Church of Universal Brotherhood Society, the organization evolved its identity and in March 2021 registered the Doing Business Name "Universal Spiritualist Centre" (USC). Alongside this rebranding, the organization modernized its Seven Principles and updated its logo.[2][5]
Mission and Activities
WSCHUBS operates as a non-profit spiritualist church offering services and programs focused on spiritual growth and community support. It functions entirely through volunteer efforts, with all funds raised dedicated to the operation of the centre and no paid staff.[2]
The organization conducts Sunday morning services, monthly Sunday evening services, and Friday evening programs that include spiritual healing, workshops, classes, and readings. These events are currently held virtually via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to resume in-person gatherings when possible.[2][5]
Legal and Charitable Status
WSCHUBS is registered as a charity in Canada, complying with the regulatory requirements set by the Canada Revenue Agency. This status allows donors to receive tax receipts and supports the organization's fundraising efforts.[4]
Ordinations and Services
The ministers of WSCHUBS are ordained and registered in British Columbia to perform marriages, reflecting the organization's recognized religious status in the province.[5]
Summary
The Western Spiritualist Church of Universal Brotherhood Society, operating publicly as the Universal Spiritualist Centre, has served the spiritualist community for over four decades. Its evolution from its original name and its ongoing commitment to volunteer-driven service delivery mark its notable role in Canadian spiritualist practice.[2][4][5]
