Red Deer River Naturalists
The Red Deer River Naturalists (RDRN) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental stewardship and conservation in Central Alberta. It is the oldest natural history organization in Alberta, with roots dating back over 120 years to the Northwest Entomological Society founded in Blackfalds.
History
The early roots of RDRN began with the Northwest Entomological Society, which later evolved into the Red Deer River Naturalists after a period of increased public concern over environmental issues in the early 1970s. During the 1980s, RDRN was actively involved in several significant projects, including the development of Waskasoo Park and the protection of Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary in Red Deer. They supported a biological mosquito control program, helped establish Ellis Bird Farm, launched the Habitat Steward Program, and reinstated the annual Christmas Bird Count. Additionally, RDRN became stewards of three natural areas.
Mission and Objectives
RDRN's mission is to involve citizens through education, encouraging them to appreciate and defend biodiversity, ecological integrity, and environmental stewardship in Central Alberta. The organization's objectives include:
- Protecting and Restoring Nature: To reverse biodiversity decline and conserve Central Alberta's natural heritage.
- Connecting People with Nature: To build a commitment to lifelong stewardship and nature conservation.
- Building Collective Voice: To encourage sustainable and ethical use of natural resources.
- Leading and Empowering Naturalists: To foster knowledge and appreciation of natural history and support conservation measures.
Governance and Activities
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, which meets monthly from August to May. RDRN hosts general meetings with guest speakers on natural history and environmental topics monthly from September to May. It also supports specialized groups, such as Bird and Flower Focus Groups, which provide opportunities for outdoor experiences and fellowship.
Recognition and Achievements
In the 2000s, RDRN received an Emerald Award for environmental excellence, underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship. The organization annually recognizes outstanding contributions with the Owl Award. Myrna Pearman, a long-standing member, has played a significant role in the organization's activities, holding various positions and editing the newsletter for 30 years.
Cultural Acknowledgment
RDRN acknowledges the traditional territories it operates within, including Treaty Six to the north and Treaty Seven to the south, recognizing the historical presence of Indigenous Peoples such as the Blackfoot, Cree, Dene, Nakota Sioux, and Saulteaux, among others. The organization strives to protect the traditional lands and waters with respect and commitment.
