NORFOLK HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Norfolk Historical Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the unique history and heritage of Norfolk County, Ontario. Established in 1900, the society is run entirely by volunteers passionate about local history[1][3].
History and Mission
Since its founding in 1900, the Norfolk Historical Society (NHS) has been actively involved in safeguarding Norfolk's history through various initiatives, including erecting historic markers, commemorating significant local events, and establishing a permanent museum[4]. The NHS aims to promote the learning and sharing of local history via programs, events, and publications[2].
Eva Brook Donly Museum and Archives
A central element of the society’s work is the stewardship of the Eva Brook Donly House, a Victorian-era residence built around 1840. The house was donated to Norfolk County by Eva Brook Donly’s estate on the condition it be used as a museum. The museum, which opened in 1946, has historically housed extensive artifacts, archives, and genealogical collections related to Norfolk County, including important UEL (United Empire Loyalist) documents and artworks by Eva Brook Donly and William Edgar Cantelon[3][4].
In 2018, Norfolk County assumed ownership and operation of the museum and archives under an Asset Transfer and Assumption of Operating Agreement, marking a transition where the NHS ceased to be the employer or guardian of the collection[1]. The museum now functions as the main archive for Norfolk’s historical documents and operates seasonally in summer and during special occasions[2].
Activities and Programs
The society promotes local history through a range of activities:
- Hosting and promoting historical workshops, commemorative events, and fundraising initiatives[1].
- Providing monthly "Gallery Series Talks" that attract community members interested in local history[2].
- Supporting youth engagement through scholarships and grants awarded to students excelling in history, genealogy, or community work[1].
- Recognizing contributions to local history preservation with a proposed Local History Award[1].
- Assisting with the publication of members’ vetted historical papers and maintaining an updated website to share resources and news[1].
Membership and Community Involvement
The Norfolk Historical Society encourages involvement from people of all ages and backgrounds, including volunteers, researchers, students, and families. Membership benefits support the society's mission to preserve Norfolk’s historical heritage for future generations[1][2][3].
