Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association Inc.
Overview
The Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association Inc. (SSCA) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable agricultural practices. It is known more commonly as Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association or SaskSoil after rebranding. The organization operates under the Business Registration Number 137200515RR0001 and is registered as a charity.
Mission and Vision
The mission of SaskSoil is "Advancing agricultural systems that improve the land and environment for future generations". It aims to be the go-to organization for science-based soil health information, focusing on practical demonstrations and promotions of beneficial management practices. These practices are designed to optimize agricultural production while minimizing environmental harm and enhancing soil resilience[1][2].
History
SaskSoil was formed in 1987 by a group of producers who recognized the need for increased awareness and education on soil conservation. Initially, the organization focused on soil conservation, but it shifted its focus to soil health broadly in 2022, following the widespread adoption of no-till farming practices among Saskatchewan farmers[1].
Activities and Programs
- Marginal Areas Rehabilitation in Saskatchewan (MARS) Program: This initiative encourages the conversion of marginal cropland into perennial forage, aiming to increase profitability while farming fewer acres. It is designed to seed down unprofitable acres and promote more efficient land use[2].
- FaRM Learning Hub: SaskSoil offers a free online resource platform, FaRM, which connects farmers with experienced mentors and a broader network across Canada. The hub focuses on sharing best practices to reduce emissions and enhance farm resilience[2].
- Conferences and Events: The organization participates in conferences and agricultural events to promote new farming practices that reduce soil degradation and promote sustainable agriculture[3].
Climate Change Initiatives
Since 1994, SaskSoil has been actively involved in promoting agricultural soil as a greenhouse gas sink, contributing to Canada's greenhouse gas management strategy. The organization has played a key role in national climate change consultations and continues to develop carbon market mechanisms such as carbon leasing, aiming to benefit producers without adding liability[1].
