Literacy Alberni Society
The Literacy Alberni Society (LAS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization registered under business number 852039940RR0001. Established to advance education and literacy, LAS provides programs and services to learners of all ages, including adult education, language acquisition support, and specialized tutoring. It operates on the unceded territories of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations in Port Alberni, British Columbia.

Programs and Services
LAS offers adult learner programs such as free tutoring, technology skill development, and English language classes for newcomers, serving as the Welcome Centre for New Canadians in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. The Klitsa Tutoring program provides tailored academic support for children struggling with subjects like math and English. Additionally, LAS delivers a web design and development employment program, combining online coding instruction with work experience to prepare participants for careers in tech.

Community Impact
LAS engages in community-building initiatives such as the Pandemic Postcard Project, which encouraged storytelling and connection during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization also runs social enterprises, including Klitsa Tutoring, to sustain its core literacy programs.

Recognition
LAS has received national and international recognition for its work, including an honourable mention from ABC Life Literacy Canada in 2015 and inclusion in the Library of Congress Literacy Awards’ Best Practices publication. Leslie Wright’s "Conversation and Community" program earned a CA$5,000 grant for its innovative approach to immigrant integration.

Operations
LAS employs two full-time staff and relies on 35 volunteers to deliver tutoring, curriculum development, and advocacy. Its learning center houses a community-accessible library stocked with free books from partners like First Book Canada. LAS has grown from a small operation to a region-wide service provider, supporting thousands of learners since its founding.
