GORDON-KING MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH

Gordon-King Memorial United Church is a Canadian nonprofit religious organization located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is affiliated with the United Church of Canada and serves as a community hub in the Glenelm neighborhood. The church is known for its rich history, architectural significance, and active engagement with local community initiatives.

History

The church was formed in 1967 through the amalgamation of two congregations: King Memorial United Church and Gordon United Church. This merger was approved by the Winnipeg Presbytery in March 1967, and the new entity was named Gordon-King Memorial United Church in April of the same year. The name commemorates two important figures in the church's history—the late John Mark King and cleric Andrew Gordon.

The origins trace back to King Memorial Church, which was previously known as Elmwood Presbyterian Church before adopting the King Memorial name in 1913. The church building on Cobourg Avenue was constructed in three phases between 1912 and 1927, designed by architect George Gaspar Teeter. The initial phase included a stone basement seating 700, followed by the addition of twin wings and the installation of a pipe organ. The final phase completed in 1927 included a superstructure with a sanctuary seating capacity of about 1,000 and 25 Sunday School classrooms. The construction costs totaled approximately $100,000 at that time.

Architecture and Facilities

The church building is noted for its architectural design by George Gaspar Teeter, featuring substantial expansions that created a large sanctuary capable of accommodating a thousand worshippers. The structure includes a main floor with seating for 550 and a gallery for 200 more. It also contains wings that house educational classrooms and community spaces.

The east wing serves as Gordie’s Place, a weekly community coffeehouse, while the west wing contains church offices and a boardroom. The church grounds include a community garden, a free library, and a community billboard, emphasizing the church’s role as a community-centered institution.

Community Engagement

Gordon-King Memorial United Church maintains a small but active congregation of about 50 regular members. The church is recognized for its commitment to community involvement and outreach programs. It hosts several initiatives aimed at fostering community ties, including social gatherings and support services.

Legacy and Recognition

The church’s long history is documented through extensive registers, photographs, and newspaper clippings that reflect its 123-year history. It is also part of Winnipeg’s architectural tour, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.

The church stands as a testament to the legacy of its founding figures and the congregations that merged to form its current community, continuing to serve as a place of worship and community engagement in Winnipeg.
