The Regent Theatre Foundation
The Regent Theatre Foundation is a Canadian nonprofit organization and registered charity (Business Registration Number 119113678RR0001) dedicated to operating and preserving The Regent Theatre, a historic cultural venue located in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. The Foundation manages the theatre as a community hub for cinema, live performances, and various cultural events, serving as a core part of the local arts and entertainment landscape.
History
The Regent Theatre was originally built in 1918 by George Cook, a Greek immigrant, as a landmark entertainment venue in Picton. Over its more than 100-year history, the theatre has played a pivotal role in the cultural life of Prince Edward County, offering both film and live stage shows. In 1994, The Regent Theatre Foundation, a volunteer-driven, community-based nonprofit organization, purchased and assumed operation of the theatre. The Foundation was incorporated in 1982 and registered as a charity to ensure the theatre's ongoing stewardship and community access.
Mission and Activities
The Regent Theatre Foundation aims to:
- Provide year-round entertainment including first-run, curated independent and international films, live theatre, music performances, and speaking events.
- Serve as a gathering space that fosters connection between audiences, artists (notably local creators), and the broader community.
- Maintain and preserve the theatre's heritage-listed building, which is a landmark of historical and architectural significance in Prince Edward County.
In addition to producing its own live events, the Foundation operates the theatre primarily as a rental venue for community groups, presenters, and individuals. The Foundation has embraced a hybrid programming model incorporating live streaming of performances to expand access and engagement.
Cultural and Community Impact
As the only purpose-built cinema and live performance venue in Prince Edward County, The Regent Theatre is central to the region's cultural identity. It is home to the County’s only film festival and has become a vital platform for artistic expression and community gatherings. The Foundation emphasizes inclusivity, cultural sharing, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples by acknowledging the theatre's location on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek and Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
Operations and Governance
The Regent Theatre Foundation is largely volunteer-run, with only one full-time employee, reflecting strong community support and involvement. The organization also offers additional spaces and equipment for rent, supporting other local arts and community initiatives.
The Foundation is committed to financial sustainability and encourages donations and memberships to support its mission and the ongoing preservation of the historic theatre.
The Regent Theatre Foundation continues to be a cornerstone institution within Prince Edward County, promoting cultural vitality and providing a dynamic venue for arts and entertainment.
