The Resource Centre for the Arts (RCA) is a nonprofit organization based in St. John's, Newfoundland, and is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business number 119117349RR0001. RCA is situated within the historic LSPU Hall, also known as The Hall, which is a central hub for live theatre and cultural events in downtown St. John's.
History
RCA was established in 1972 as an artist-run, community-based organization. Initially formed as the Resource Foundation for the Arts, it was incorporated on November 21, 1972. The organization purchased the LSPU Hall building in 1976, and in 1984, it underwent renovations to enhance its heritage features, earning the 1984 Southcott Award from Heritage Newfoundland and Labrador. A major renovation took place in 2008, funded by various government agencies and local organizations, which significantly upgraded the performance space and facilities. The Hall reopened in 2010 with new theatre seats, dressing rooms, and improved accessibility features.
Mission and Activities
RCA's mission is to provide accessible, supportive, and well-resourced programs and venues for the performing arts. It functions as a platform for the development and showcase of Newfoundland art and artists. The organization houses a 175-198 seat theatre and the Cox & Palmer Second Space, which offers a bar and smaller event area. RCA is a member of the St. John's Board of Trade and is governed by an elected Board of Directors consisting of arts practitioners and professionals.
Programs and Venues
The organization supports various artistic endeavors through its venues, including live performances, workshops, and community events. It provides opportunities for emerging artists to share their work and connect with audiences. The Cox & Palmer Second Space is utilized for smaller events and performances, adding to the diversity of cultural activities hosted by RCA.
Governance and Funding
As a registered charity, RCA relies on donations and funding from both private and public sectors to support its activities. The organization is governed by a board of directors who oversee its operations and strategic development. This governance structure ensures that RCA remains aligned with its mission to foster the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador.
