Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Inc.

The Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Inc. is a Canadian nonprofit choral organization founded in 1964 by organist John Sidgwick. Established as an alternative to the traditional choral groups of the time, the choir introduced Toronto audiences to a broader and richer variety of choral music, quickly becoming one of the city's most distinguished and important choirs.

History

The choir made its debut on December 26, 1964, with a program of carols and has since evolved into a prominent mixed amateur choir in Toronto. Initially led by its founder John Sidgwick until 1970, Orpheus flourished under the leadership of several notable conductors including James Whicher, Lloyd Bradshaw, John Barnum, and Brainerd Blyden-Taylor.

Marking its 25th anniversary in 1989, the choir established the Sidgwick Scholarship Program in honour of its founding director. This program supports emerging vocal talents pursuing careers in vocal performance and has grown to include eight annual scholarship positions, an apprentice conductor role, and a Vocal Apprentice Program aimed at talented high school students.

In 2003, Robert Cooper took over as artistic director, spearheading a renewal and revitalization of the choir. Over his two decades of leadership, the choir transitioned beyond its community choir origins, embracing more diverse and ambitious musical projects. Following Cooper’s departure, the position of artistic director was filled by Thomas Burton in 2023 after an extensive search.

Artistic Vision and Programming

Under Thomas Burton’s direction, the Orpheus Choir of Toronto continues to be a preeminent choral ensemble in Canada, known for championing new and unusual works alongside overlooked masterpieces. The choir maintains a commitment to high production values and regularly collaborates with contemporary composers, performing a wide range of repertoire and premiering new compositions.

The choir often features diverse programs, including French, Canadian, and Haitian masterworks. Performances have highlighted works such as Francis Poulenc’s celebrated Gloria, among other significant choral pieces.

Community and Educational Outreach

The Orpheus Choir actively nurtures young and emerging talents through its scholarship and apprentice programs. The Vocal Apprentice Program engages gifted high school students, fostering the next generation of choral artists. The choir’s ongoing dedication to education reflects its mission to not only perform but also to support vocal artistry development in Toronto and beyond.

The Orpheus Choir of Toronto stands as a vital cultural institution, recognized for its artistic excellence and commitment to expanding the choral repertoire while fostering new talent in the Canadian choral community.
