The Comox Archives and Museum Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Comox Valley region in British Columbia. It operates the Comox Archives and Museum, which serves as a cultural and historical center for the community, showcasing exhibits that trace the evolution of Comox from its first European settlers to the present day.
History and Mission
The Society was established to collect, preserve, and interpret historical artifacts, documents, and stories related to the Comox area. It actively promotes discovery and learning, highlighting various aspects of local heritage including indigenous history, early settlement, and significant community contributions.
Facilities and Exhibits
Located at 1729 Comox Avenue in Comox, British Columbia, the museum occupies a space that once served as a library building. Its exhibits are dynamic, frequently updated to reflect new research and themes. Permanent displays include a section dedicated to the K’omox First Nation and a tribute to the 102nd Battalion, honoring their sacrifices during World War I.
Recent improvements include the installation of warm LED track lighting and the addition of movable wooden display walls to enhance exhibition flexibility. The museum also features a shop offering books, cards, and various gift items.
Community Engagement and Programs
The Society actively curates exhibits that celebrate local history and community achievements. A notable project is the organization of an exhibit on the Lazo Women’s Institute, highlighting the social and charitable activities of this group since its formation in 1921, including support efforts during World War II.
In 2022, the Society published Baybrook: Life’s Best Adventure, a book based on an 80-year-old manuscript by Hamilton Mack Laing, fulfilling the author’s wish to share his story posthumously.
Operations
The Comox Archives and Museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. Admission is free, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the rich history of the Comox Valley.
Support and Funding
The Society relies on donations and sponsorships to maintain its operations and advance its mission. Contributions support acquisitions, conservation, educational programming, and exhibit development.
