The Robert Wood Singers Inc.

The Robert Wood Singers Inc. is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to choral singing and musical productions. Founded in 1968 by Robert Wood under the auspices of the Port Colborne Operatic Society in Port Colborne, Ontario, the choir has been a prominent musical ensemble serving the Niagara Peninsula region. Initially composed of local Port Colborne residents, the membership has since expanded to include singers from various parts of the Niagara Peninsula.

History

The choir was established to provide a platform for choral music enthusiasts and has since become known for its harmonious and engaging performances. Robert Wood, the founding music director, led the choir until 2000 when he temporarily retired from the role. Leadership was then passed to Deanna Schaus, who directed the choir until 2008. Robert Wood resumed the directorship that year, working alongside assistant director Ron Gorham. Andrew Carruthers took over as musical director from 2012 to 2015, followed by Deanna Schaus returning to the position until spring 2018. In the fall of 2018, Victoria Rondinelli was welcomed as the new director.

The organization has approximately 48 active members and continues to grow as it recruits new singers.

Mission and Activities

The Robert Wood Singers focus on delivering high-quality choral performances and engaging the community through music. The choir is available for fundraising events and musical outreach, contributing to the cultural life of the Niagara Peninsula region.

Legacy and Scholarship

Following the passing of Robert Wood on September 22, 2023, the organization established a scholarship in his memory. This scholarship is aimed at supporting graduating secondary school students who wish to pursue further education in music, perpetuating Wood’s passion for musical development.
