Tikva Housing Society
The Tikva Housing Society is a Canadian registered nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing primarily for working-age Jewish low-income adults and families in the Greater Vancouver area. Established as a charitable housing society, Tikva focuses on acquiring, developing, and managing affordable rental housing to support community members in need of stable housing solutions.
Mission and Objectives
Tikva Housing Society aims to facilitate access to affordable housing and related community support, with a particular focus on the Jewish community in Vancouver and surrounding regions. The society's core objectives include:
- Acquiring, constructing, and managing housing accommodations for low-income families and individuals, including those who are functionally handicapped.
- Purchasing and developing land and buildings necessary for affordable housing projects.
- Conducting educational and research programs related to multi-family housing and community facilities, especially targeting the Jewish community of Greater Vancouver.
- Raising funds through memberships, donations, and other financial means to support its housing initiatives.
- Providing rent subsidies to assist households facing temporary financial crises in maintaining market rental housing.
Housing Initiatives and Programs
Tikva operates multiple affordable housing developments across Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby, with over 160 rental units. Notable projects include the acquisition of a four-story apartment building in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighborhood, close to synagogues and community centers, providing 20 affordable rental homes. Another significant development is Susana Cogan Place in South Burnaby, consisting of 20 new affordable rental homes for low to moderate-income families and individuals, developed in partnership with Polygon Homes and supported by BC Housing.
Additionally, Tikva offers a Rent Subsidy Program, which provides short-term rent subsidies to households living in market rental housing who are experiencing temporary financial hardship. This program helps prevent homelessness and stabilizes vulnerable households within the community.
Impact and Community Role
Tikva Housing Society plays a crucial role in addressing affordable housing challenges faced by low-income Jewish individuals and families in Greater Vancouver. By providing stable and affordable living environments, Tikva empowers residents to participate more fully in their community and enhances their overall well-being. The society promotes the principle that housing is not merely a human right but also foundational to health, security, and social inclusion.
The society regularly publishes impact reports outlining its progress, community reach, and future projects, demonstrating transparency and accountability to donors and stakeholders.
Registration and Governance
Tikva Housing Society operates as a registered charity under the Canadian Revenue Agency (Business Registration Number: 842562613RR0001). It complies with all regulatory requirements, ensuring responsible management and use of donations to further its charitable purposes.
