The Douglas Park Community Association

The Douglas Park Community Association (DPCA) is a registered Canadian nonprofit organization operating in conjunction with the Vancouver Park Board to manage and develop community programs at the Douglas Park Community Centre. The association is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents of the Douglas Park community by providing affordable and diverse facilities and programming.

History

Douglas Park itself was established in 1926, named in commemoration of Sir James Douglas, the first Governor of the Colony of British Columbia. Initially, this area was a logging camp and later a grazing site for elk, followed by the first market garden south of False Creek in 1882. The community centre was constructed in 1964 with a local improvement bylaw, marking the beginning of the DPCA's role in community development.

Purpose and Mission

The DPCA aims to provide high-quality community programs and services that cater to the diverse needs of the local residents. Its mission is focused on fostering community engagement and participation through various initiatives, ensuring accessible and affordable programming for all members of the community.

Programs and Services

The Douglas Park Community Centre offers a wide range of activities and facilities, including a pottery studio, a teen/youth centre, childcare services, a fitness centre, tennis courts, sports fields, and a wading pool. The DPCA is particularly active in childcare, with programs like the Douglas Park Preschool and Licensed School Age Care. These programs are designed to offer a nurturing environment that promotes social, emotional, and educational growth among children.

Governance and Operations

The DPCA works collaboratively with the Vancouver Park Board to develop and implement programs. The Park Board provides the necessary facilities, utilities, maintenance, and staff support, while the DPCA engages in community outreach, manages volunteers, and oversees the financial aspects of program operations. The association is responsible for collecting program revenue, which supports the employment of association staff, subsidies for low-income individuals and seniors, and contributions to the Park Board for various operational expenses.

Impact and Contribution

Through its efforts, the DPCA has contributed significantly to the development and renovation of the community centre, expanding preschool and out-of-school care services. The association also organizes special events and promotes community involvement in local initiatives. Its focus on affordability and inclusivity ensures that the benefits of community programs reach all segments of the community.
