Citizens Environment Alliance of Southwestern Ontario
The Citizens Environment Alliance of Southwestern Ontario is a non-profit, grass-roots, international education and research organization. Established in 1985 by citizens concerned about environmental pollution, the Alliance focuses on enhancing environmental sustainability in southwestern Ontario.
Background
The organization was prompted by concerns over chemical spills from Chemical Valley in Sarnia into the St. Clair River, which posed a threat to the region's drinking water. Over time, the CEA expanded its scope to address broader environmental issues, including toxins in the Great Lakes and air quality in the transboundary area between Canada and the United States.
Mission and Activities
The CEA is committed to an ecosystem approach for environmental planning and management. Its mandate includes protecting, restoring, and enhancing the quality of the local environment in the Detroit-St. Clair River corridors, the western basin of Lake Erie, and the Windsor-Essex-Kent Region of the Great Lakes Basin.
Key Areas of Focus
- Waste Management: The Alliance works on sustainable waste management practices to reduce environmental impact.
- Wetland and Natural Areas Protection: Efforts are made to preserve and protect wetlands and natural habitats crucial for biodiversity.
- Environmental Land Use Planning: The CEA advocates for sustainable land use practices that minimize environmental degradation.
- Energy Use and Long-term Implications of Economic Growth: The organization explores how energy consumption and economic development impact environmental sustainability.
Collaborations
The CEA collaborates with other environmental organizations and networks, including Climate Action Network Canada and Green Infrastructure Ontario, to advance environmental goals. The organization also participates in local and regional initiatives to foster environmental stewardship.
Membership and Participation
Membership is open to concerned citizens of Windsor and Essex County, with membership fees structured for different demographics. The Alliance engages with local communities through education and advocacy to enhance public awareness of environmental issues and their impact on ecosystems.
Business Registration
The Citizens Environment Alliance of Southwestern Ontario is registered under Business Registration Number 899837850RR0001.
