Applewood Centre for Adult Learning
Applewood Centre for Adult Learning is a Canadian nonprofit organization and registered charity based in Mississauga, Ontario, dedicated to providing educational and developmental programs for adults with developmental disabilities. Established in 2008 by parents of young adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, Applewood offers a unique daytime program aimed at fostering independence, personal growth, social skills development, and lifelong learning for individuals aged 21 and over in the Peel Region.[1][2][3]
History and Background
The centre was founded in response to the lack of community-based support programs for young adults with special needs after they graduate from the school system at age 21. Initially serving 10 clients with a start-up grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and operating out of a Peel District School Board public school, Applewood has significantly expanded its services over the years. By 2012, the centre relocated to its current facility at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Learning Centre and now serves approximately 60 clients and their families.[2]
Mission and Vision
Applewood Centre’s mission is to empower adults with diverse developmental abilities through a dynamic day program designed to encourage independence, personal growth, and community engagement. The centre emphasizes social, recreational, and academic activities tailored to individual needs to build confidence and equip participants for thriving lives beyond their home environment.
Its vision is to create a world where adults with developmental disabilities live with independence, inclusion, and purpose in a supportive community that fosters continuous learning, meaningful connections, and well-being for both the participants and their families.[2][3]
Programs and Services
Applewood offers a structured adult day program that operates Monday to Friday, providing flexible enrollment options including full-day (9 AM to 4 PM) and half-day sessions (morning or afternoon). The program focuses on areas such as social development, fitness, life skills, and recreation through meaningful activities designed and facilitated by professional staff, including Developmental Service Workers (DSWs), Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs), and Social Service Workers (SSWs).
The centre emphasizes individualized learning plans that address each participant’s unique abilities and needs, fostering independence and social inclusion in a supportive and engaging environment.[1][5]
Governance and Funding
Applewood Centre for Adult Learning functions as a registered charity under the Canadian Revenue Agency with the business registration number 850242413RR0001. It is governed by an elected Board of Directors and supported by a professional caregiving staff. Tuition fees are set to cover operational costs, and the organization actively engages in fundraising to support and expand its programs.[3][5]
Applewood Centre for Adult Learning remains a vital community resource providing lifelong learning opportunities and enhancing quality of life for adults with developmental disabilities in the Peel Region.
