Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria Society
The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria Society, a registered non-profit organization, has been a cornerstone for yoga practice in Victoria, British Columbia, since its inception in the 1970s. Under the leadership of Shirley Daventry French, the center initially operated at the YM/YWCA before relocating to its current premises in 2001.
History and Development
The center's origins date back to the 1970s, reflecting an early interest in the Iyengar method in Canada. Over the years, teachers and students have strengthened their practice by participating in workshops and studies in India with B.K.S. Iyengar and his family. This connection has helped foster a deep understanding and appreciation of Iyengar yoga among the community.
Non-Profit Status and Governance
In 2001, the center became a registered charity, allowing it to issue tax receipts for donations exceeding $25. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, who work alongside the General Manager to address business issues. This non-profit status is unique among yoga studios in Victoria, setting it apart from for-profit establishments.
Community and Operations
The center functions as a community-based institution, where both paid staff and volunteers contribute to its operations. Teachers, students, and volunteers alike view the center as a place of communal support and growth. The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria Society promotes a sense of inclusivity, offering classes that cater to diverse skill levels and needs, including a "Pay What You Can" policy to ensure accessibility for all members of the community.
Practice and Philosophy
The center emphasizes the physical, mental, and spiritual development of its members through the discipline of Iyengar yoga. This approach is characterized by precise alignment, sequencing, and the use of props to make yoga accessible to everyone. The practice aims to reflect the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, focusing on the integration of body, mind, and spirit.
