CityFolk Festival

The CityFolk Festival, formerly known as the Ottawa Folk Festival, is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to celebrating music, dance, and community through a multi-day festival held annually in Ottawa, Ontario. Established in 1994 by Max Wallace and Chris White, it was initially inspired by Ottawa's vibrant folk scene. Over the years, the festival has evolved to feature an eclectic mix of musical genres, including folk, rock, alternative, bluegrass, hip hop, and more.

History

The festival was first held on Victoria Island in the Ottawa River. In 1995, it moved to Britannia Park, where it remained until 2010. From 2011 to 2014, the event was held at Hog's Back Park in central Ottawa. During this period, the team behind Ottawa Bluesfest began to produce the festival. Since 2015, the CityFolk Festival has been located at Lansdowne Park.

Mandate

CityFolk aims to:

  • Provide a platform for performers across various musical genres to express their creativity and imagination.
  • Integrate visual artists and craftspeople as integral components of the festival.
  • Value volunteers and staff by offering opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Foster community involvement and enhance the cultural life of the local area.
Events

The festival offers over 30 shows on indoor and outdoor stages, featuring local and international artists. Previous performances have included renowned acts such as Van Morrison, David Byrne, Lorde, and Robert Plant. Alongside music, the festival includes craft beer fairs, artisan markets, and family-friendly activities.

Organization

The festival is supported by hundreds of volunteers, who play a crucial role in its operation. Their contributions are invaluable, equivalent to significant financial support if compensated. Additionally, students can earn Ontario high school credits by volunteering. Mark Monahan serves as the current executive and artistic director.

Business Registration

CityFolk Festival is registered as a nonprofit organisation with a Business Registration Number of 884426040RR0001.
