New Start Standardbred Adoption
New Start Standardbred Adoption is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehoming, rehabilitation, and rescue of Standardbred horses. Founded in 2020, the organization operates primarily in Ontario, with expanding outreach into Eastern Canada, including the Maritime provinces.
Mission
The mission of New Start Standardbred Adoption is to provide a compassionate pathway for retired and at-risk Standardbreds, whether coming directly from racing or rescued from adverse situations. The organization focuses on holistic rehabilitation, responsible placement, and ongoing support to ensure that each horse finds a loving and respectful home.
Operations
New Start Standardbred Adoption is 100% volunteer-run, with no financial compensation for its members. All funds, including those used for operations and care, come from donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees. The organization works with Standardbred owners and caretakers to match horses with suitable adopters through a detailed application and assessment process. This includes taking on rehabilitation and rescue cases that others may consider beyond help.
Achievements
In its initial year, New Start successfully rehomed 16 Standardbreds. In the following years, they continued to grow their impact, helping more horses find safe homes. Notably, in early 2021, the organization rescued four Standardbreds from a slaughter/ship auction pen. These horses faced significant health challenges, including malnourishment, physical injuries, and mental trauma due to neglect and abuse. New Start's efforts have provided these horses with the care and compassion needed for recovery.
Rehabilitation and Post-Adoption Support
New Start emphasizes the rehabilitation of horses coming from less-than-ideal situations, such as auctions. They provide necessary care to help these horses recover physically and mentally. Additionally, the organization conducts regular post-adoption check-ins with adopters to ensure the long-term safety and well-being of the horses.
Expansion and Community Impact
Beyond rehoming, New Start offers educational programs and sanctuary options for retired racehorses. Their outreach and services have expanded across the eastern provinces, aiming to broaden their impact and support a wider community of owners and adopters. This comprehensive approach highlights their commitment to improving the lives of Standardbreds across Canada.

FOSTER PLACEMENT NEEDED New Start continues to actively search for a foster placement for one of our mares who needs to move by the end of the month due to changes in her adopter’s circumstances. She is currently located in the Quinte region of Ontario. This lovely mare is trail safe, ring safe, kid safe, and husband safe — but she is a forward ride and a bigger-bodied girl, so she’s best suited for someone confident and comfortable with a horse that likes to move.
