The Richmond Community Orchestra and Chorus Association
The Richmond Community Orchestra and Chorus Association (ROCA) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering musical excellence and community engagement through orchestral and choral music. Established in 1986, ROCA brings together dedicated amateur musicians under professional leadership to enrich the cultural landscape of Richmond, British Columbia, and its surroundings.
History
ROCA was founded by George Austin and a small group of musicians with the goal of providing opportunities for musicians to perform and share music with the Richmond community. Over the years, the organization has grown to include nearly 100 members from diverse backgrounds and age groups, ranging from high school students to seniors. The orchestra and chorus present a broad repertoire, including classical pieces, seasonal favorites, sacred and spiritual works, folk, jazz, modern compositions, and show tunes.
The orchestra has been led by several conductors throughout its history, including Peter Rohloff, Charles Willet, Wallace Leung, Lorraine Grescoe, and Chris Robertson. Since 2007, James Malmberg has served as the Artistic Director and Orchestra Conductor. The chorus has had only two conductors: Len Lythgoe (1987–1994) and Brigid Coult (1994–present), who also serves as the Chorus Conductor and Artistic Director.
Mission and Vision
ROCA believes that a vibrant cultural scene is essential to building a strong, healthy, and vibrant community. The organization is committed to:
- Musical excellence in performance
- Building connections through audience engagement
- Nurturing musical talent among musicians of all ages
- Providing community service through music
Their mission emphasizes the importance of music in enhancing the lives of both performers and audiences, and ROCA strives to make exemplary contributions to the cultural life of Richmond through a diverse program of concerts and music education initiatives.
Community Involvement and Programs
The Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association actively engages with the community through various outreach and service programs. These include a community partnership program, an elementary school outreach initiative, and benefit concerts supporting local charities. Since 2006, ROCA's Richmond Chorus has hosted "Richmond Sings!," an annual benefit concert that unites youth and adult choirs to raise funds for local charities assisting families in Richmond.
The association also supports community efforts such as food donations, raising significant contributions for organizations like the Richmond Food Bank. The organization is committed to making music accessible and inclusive, offering family-friendly, wheelchair-accessible performances.
Organization and Leadership
ROCA operates under professional musical leadership, with James Malmberg serving as Artistic Director and Orchestra Conductor, and Brigid Coult as Artistic Director and Chorus Conductor. The organization continues to be driven by the dedication of its volunteer musicians and leadership team, who share a passion for music and community service.
Summary
The Richmond Community Orchestra and Chorus Association stands as a pillar of Richmond's cultural community, combining amateur musicianship with professional direction to deliver high-quality musical experiences. Its commitment to community engagement, education, and musical diversity has sustained its presence and impact since 1986, making it a cherished institution in the region.
