Westland Foundation Inc.
The Westland Foundation Inc. is a federally registered, grassroots, and volunteer-based charitable organization in Canada. Established in 1993, the Foundation is dedicated to empowering inner-Winnipeg youth by providing them with access to higher education.
Mission and Goals
The primary mission of the Westland Foundation is to ensure that all students from inner-Winnipeg neighborhoods have the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. This is in line with its broader goal of helping these young individuals succeed in today's complex and competitive world[2]. The Foundation aims to create a better quality of life in these communities through education.
Structure and Operations
The Foundation operates under the leadership of a dedicated seven-member volunteer board, supported by a network of volunteers[2]. Since its inception, it has been driven by volunteer efforts, including those of its founding members, such as Allen and Beverly Harasymuk and Walter Silicz, who have played critical roles in shaping the organization[4].
Funding and Scholarships
The Westland Foundation has successfully raised over $2 million for its Education Fund. Between 2009 and the present, it has awarded more than 1,120 scholarships, totaling over $610,000, to inner-Winnipeg youth. This financial support helps students cover the costs associated with higher education[2].
Registration and Recognition
The Westland Foundation is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), emphasizing its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in its operations[2]. This status allows donors to receive tax benefits for their contributions.
Volunteer Opportunities
The organization encourages public participation through various volunteer opportunities. These roles contribute to the Foundation's growth and development, ensuring its continued impact in the community[4].
