StoryBook Theatre Society
StoryBook Theatre Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to producing quality family theatre for children of all ages. Based in Calgary, Alberta, the organization has been a vital part of the community for over four decades, serving as a bridge between professional and emerging artists.
History
The origins of StoryBook Theatre Society date back to the passion of Ellie Tims, a Calgary schoolteacher who was enthralled by live theatre. Along with her fellow teacher friends, Tims would write original plays, fostering an environment where creativity and storytelling thrived. In 1977, this vision culminated in the first production of StoryBook Theatre, titled Buckskin and Chapperos.
Over the years, StoryBook Theatre Society has grown significantly, establishing itself as one of Canada's largest theatres for young audiences. It has collaborated with notable organizations such as Lunchbox Theatre, Forte Musical Theatre Guild, and The Shakespeare Company to deliver high-quality productions. By 2016/17, the organization transitioned into a semi-professional entity, offering a variety of shows and programs at affordable prices. Initiatives like the Ellie Tims Project have contributed to its mission of inclusivity by providing access to theatre for all members of the community.
Mission and Vision
StoryBook Theatre Society is committed to offering Calgary audiences quality theatre productions and theatre school programming at affordable prices. The organization's vision emphasizes creating family entertainment that appeals to a wide age range, from three to 103. It provides emerging artists with opportunities to learn and grow alongside working professionals, fostering a community that values inclusivity and skill development. The theatre places a strong emphasis on ensuring accessibility for all children, regardless of their financial means.
Programs and Achievements
Through its extensive programming, StoryBook Theatre Society has become a cornerstone for nurturing talent in the arts sector. It has hosted over a million patrons, consistently selling out shows while maintaining a focus on community engagement. The organization's commitment to developing new Canadian work for family audiences has contributed significantly to the cultural landscape of Calgary.
With its volunteer-driven approach, StoryBook Theatre Society continues to play a pivotal role in fostering artistic growth, collaboration, and community engagement in Calgary's vibrant arts scene.
