Saskatoon Concert Band

The Saskatoon Concert Band is a Canadian nonprofit organization formed in 1982 from a lineage of predecessor bands that date back to the mid-20th century. It has a rich history of musical performances and community engagement.

History

The band's origins trace back to the Canadian Air Force Band in 1947 and continued through several other titles, including the 406 Wing Band (later the 23rd Wing Band), Kinsmen Concert Band, and the HMCS Unicorn Band[1][4]. The 23rd Wing Band, an earlier incarnation, won the Canadian National Exhibition and featured renowned guest artists like Rafael Mendez during its performances[1][4].

In the 1950s, the band was reorganized as the Kinsmen Concert Band[2]. The HMCS Unicorn Band participated in significant events such as Saskatchewan's Centennial year celebrations, touring Northern Saskatchewan, performing at the Legislature, and the opening of the Gardiner Dam[1][4].

Leadership

John H. Schoen, a native of Saskatoon, served as the conductor and music director from the band's inception until his retirement. Schoen began playing cornet at the age of five and was part of the Saskatoon Boys Band before his military service during World War II.
