It is recognized for its vibrant community presence and its commitment to artistic excellence under the direction of accomplished conductors. The choir is known for a diverse repertoire and for staging concerts that appeal to a broad audience.

History and Development

Founded more than five decades ago, the Malaspina Choir Society has played a significant role in the cultural life of Nanaimo. Over the years, it has hosted choirs from across Canada and internationally, fostering a rich exchange of musical ideas and talent. Artistic Direction

Currently, the choir is led by Artistic Director Fiona Blackburn, who holds two music degrees and a master's degree in conducting from the University of British Columbia. Under her inspired leadership, the choir has reached new levels of accomplishment, expanding not only in size but also in the scope and diversity of its programming.

Activities and Community Impact

The Society conducts regular rehearsals and workshops aimed at improving its members' choral skills. It stages public performances throughout the year, including gala concerts and special events. For instance, in April 2023, the Malaspina Choir celebrated its rich history with a jubilant concert titled "Jubilation" at the Port Theatre, reflecting its enduring presence and ongoing contributions to arts in Nanaimo.
