Harlequin Singers of Hamilton
The Harlequin Singers of Hamilton is a Canadian nonprofit adult choral organization based in Hamilton, Ontario. Founded in 1967 as part of a Centennial Project by members of Hamilton Theatre Incorporated, the group specializes in performing Broadway-based show tunes and has grown to become one of Ontario’s largest and premier Broadway music choirs[3][4].
History
The Harlequin Singers originated when a subset of Hamilton Theatre Incorporated members interested in choral singing formed a break-out group focusing on Broadway musical numbers. Following auditions, the group officially came into being and quickly gained popularity. Over the past 50+ years, the choir has performed extensively, entertaining thousands of music lovers with a distinctive jazzy and mellow sound[3].
Repertoire and Performances
The choir's versatile repertoire includes selections from Broadway musicals, award-winning films, the big band era, jazz, contemporary folk, and pop charts. They perform several concerts annually, notably their Christmas and Spring concerts. Additionally, the Harlequin Singers regularly perform at senior-living centers and various charitable events, including causes such as the Out of the Cold program, ALS Society, CNIB, and the Hamilton Spectator Summer Camp Fund[1][3][5].
Community Engagement
As a community-oriented nonprofit, the Harlequin Singers contribute to local charities and provide entertainment for retirement homes and the general public. They also accept invitations for corporate events and private functions within the region[1][3].
Membership
Membership is open to adults aged 19 to 65 who have the ability to read and memorize sheet music. Auditions are conducted twice yearly in September and January. An annual membership fee is required[5].
Organization and Status
The Harlequin Singers of Hamilton operates as a registered nonprofit charity under the Business Registration Number 136849171RR0001. They comply with Canada Revenue Agency regulations for registered charities and have maintained this status to support their mission of community cultural enrichment through musical performance[2].
This overview highlights the Harlequin Singers of Hamilton as a long-standing and vibrant musical institution contributing to the cultural fabric of Hamilton through Broadway and popular music choral performances.
