Theatre Nova Scotia
Theatre Nova Scotia is a nonprofit organization that serves as the primary resource and advocate for the theatre community in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was formed in 2001 through the merger of the Nova Scotia Drama League and the Nova Scotia Professional Theatre Alliance.
History
The Nova Scotia Drama League was established in 1951 by an act of the provincial legislature. It played a significant role in promoting and fostering theatre and theatre artists across Nova Scotia.
Meanwhile, the Nova Scotia Professional Theatre Alliance was founded in 1991. It focused on developing programs that supported Nova Scotia's vibrant professional theatre community.
By combining these two organizations, Theatre Nova Scotia was able to integrate their resources and create a more cohesive and dynamic entity. This merger helped enhance the theatre sector in Nova Scotia, aligning with broader Canadian theatre developments.
Role and Impact
Theatre Nova Scotia is instrumental in promoting the arts across the province. It builds on the legacy of early amateur theatre groups and the establishment of institutions like the Canada Council in the 1950s. The foundation of key theatres such as Neptune Theatre in 1961 has further enriched Nova Scotia's theatre landscape.
Over the years, the province has seen the emergence of notable companies such as the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Ship's Company Theatre, and Mulgrave Road Theatre. Theatre Nova Scotia's work contributes to the continued growth and interest in live theatre, facilitating education and participation across the community.
Current Status
Today, Theatre Nova Scotia supports over thirty theatre companies and continues to be a vital advocate for the theatre sector. Its role includes fostering artistic development, promoting local talent, and ensuring the sustainability of theatre in Nova Scotia.
The organization's mission aligns with the broader goals of Canadian theatre, promoting collaborative work between artists, educators, and communities to enhance cultural life in the province.
