Vinok Folkdance Society

The Vinok Folkdance Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting cultural dance and music through its flagship program, Vinok Worldance. The society aims to foster appreciation and celebration of global cultures by presenting traditional and contemporary performances that highlight the diversity of the world's peoples.

History and Background

Founded in 1992 by Leanne Koziak and Doyle Marko, both former Cheremosh dancers who had spent years studying and researching dance and culture in Europe, the Vinok Folkdance Society was created to realize their vision of a professional folk dance ensemble in Canada. The original ensemble was named Vinok Folkdance Ensemble and later renamed Vinok Worldance. The founders' artistic philosophy centers on using dance, music, song, and improvisation as a mirror to celebrate life and cultural identity.

The name "Vinok" is derived from the Ukrainian word for a floral wreath traditionally worn by young women, symbolizing a collection of diverse cultural expressions coming together as one harmonious unit. This metaphor reflects the company’s goal of embracing and showcasing the beautiful variety of world cultures through performance.

Mission and Activities

Vinok Worldance tours extensively throughout North America, having performed in a wide array of locations from Yellowknife to Florida, and Newfoundland to British Columbia. Its repertoire includes dances and music from over 60 cultures across five continents. Performances feature live music played by the company’s multi-instrumentalists, often performing original compositions or orchestrations to accompany the dances. The society also maintains an extensive collection of authentic cultural costumes, many crafted in the cultures' countries of origin.

The organization not only entertains but also educates, with acclaimed school programs and productions aimed at increasing cultural awareness. Vinok’s educational outreach has been recognized internationally, including tours to festivals in Taiwan and Dubai, and television broadcasts.

Cultural Impact and Recognition

The Vinok Folkdance Society has been described as "Canada’s United Nations of Dance" for its dedication to representing and honoring cultural diversity through the performing arts. Their contributions have been significant in cultural celebrations, including participation in the Alberta Centennial celebrations in 2005 with a special production called Alberta Unity Dance.

Through its artistic endeavors, the society serves as a catalyst for connection and joy, inspiring audiences to appreciate the richness of global cultures, promoting inclusivity, and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
