History

The Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, supported by the Vancouver Philharmonic Society, has its roots dating back to the early 1960s. During this period, two string orchestras, the Dunbar Community Centre Orchestra conducted by Jean Glazer and the Jewish Community Centre Orchestra led by Jerry Glass, merged to form the nucleus of the orchestra. The addition of wind players in the mid-1960s transformed it into a full symphony orchestra. Initially, it was incorporated as the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra in 1966 and later renamed the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972[1].

Mission and Activities

Since its inception, the organization has been committed to enriching lives through live music experiences. It has played a significant role in supporting Canadian composers by performing both new and existing works. Over the years, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra has premiered and commissioned numerous new compositions, contributing to the Canadian music scene.

The Vancouver Philharmonic Society also supports emerging artists through various initiatives. Notably, since the 1990s, it has run the Wallace Leung Memorial Assistant Conductor Internship, providing mentorship opportunities for young conductors working with a full symphony orchestra.
