KANATA THEATRE
Exceptional talent. Memorable performances.
Kanata Theatre is a Canadian nonprofit community theatre organization based in the Kanata district of Ottawa, Ontario. Established in 1968, it began as a play reading group in a small residential community and has since grown into a vibrant theatre company with more than 500 members. The organization operates the Ron Maslin Playhouse, a 350-seat professional-level theatre facility that opened in 1996 after extensive fundraising efforts[1][4][5].
History and Development
Kanata Theatre originated in 1968 in a modest neighborhood with limited infrastructure. Over time, the organization expanded significantly in both membership and scope. The opening of the Ron Maslin Playhouse in May 1996 marked a major milestone, providing a dedicated venue equipped with advanced lighting, sound, and set construction capabilities, enhancing the theatrical experience for patrons and performers alike. The project was funded through Kanata Theatreβs own building fund, supplemented by a federal-provincial infrastructure grant, with the City of Kanata providing the site. The playhouse was named in honor of longtime member Ron Maslin, and its design was created by architect Peter Smith[1][4][5].
Organization and Membership
Kanata Theatre is a 100% volunteer-run organization. All roles, from performing to technical and front-of-house duties such as box office and ushering, are staffed by volunteers passionate about theatre. The company operates under a democratically elected Board of Directors, with all members eligible to vote and stand for office. Its governance is defined by established By-Laws. Kanata Theatre operates without government operating grants, relying on income from ticket sales, membership fees, and donations to fund its activities[1][2][4].
Productions and Programming
The theatre company presents a season of five main stage plays, a holiday show aimed at children, and a showcase production featuring young performers from its children and youth programs. Additionally, it produces a summer festival of 10-minute plays. Performance genres include musical theatre, drama, and dance, offering a diverse repertoire to the community[1][4].
Community Involvement and Funding
As a registered Canadian charity (Business Registration Number: 118977602RR0001), Kanata Theatre depends heavily on community support and donations, as it does not receive operational grants from any level of government. Donations are encouraged at various levels, with donors sometimes acknowledged in programs or by personalized thank-yous. The organization also promotes ticket sales and gift certificates as means of support[2][3].
Notable Events
In 2009, to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Kanata Theatre hosted the Ontario Theatre Festival at the Ron Maslin Playhouse. This event featured visiting theatre groups from across Ontario presenting their best productions, culminating in an awards brunch[1].
Kanata Theatre continues to serve as a cornerstone of cultural life in Kanata, nurturing local talent and providing accessible, high-quality theatrical entertainment to its community.
