Calgary Opera Association
The Calgary Opera Association, more commonly known as Calgary Opera, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the art of opera in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
History
Calgary Opera was founded in 1972 as the Southern Alberta Opera Association by a group of Calgary citizens. The organization began staging two opera productions annually from 1973 to 1977. Alexander Gray, a baritone, served as the inaugural artistic director until 1976. Notable early productions included La Bohème and Rigoletto, which debuted in 1973[1][3].
In 1983, the organization underwent a name change to the Calgary Opera Association. This period was marked by significant leadership and artistic developments, including the direction of General Director David Speers, who played a pivotal role in the organization's growth during the late 1980s[2]. The name was adjusted again, though the change did not significantly alter its mission.
Mission and Vision
Calgary Opera is renowned for its innovative approach to opera, focusing on both traditional classics and contemporary works. The organization is committed to fostering Canadian talent and creating new operas, making it a national and international force in the opera community[5]. Its mission emphasizes collaboration with various arts organizations, showcasing a diverse range of productions, and providing educational activities for young artists.
Notable Productions and Achievements
Over the years, Calgary Opera has produced a wide array of operas, including Carmen, Faust, Turandot, and The Marriage of Figaro[3]. The company also engages in educational activities and supports the development of emerging Canadian artists.
Community Engagement
Calgary Opera serves as a cultural anchor in the community, acknowledging the rich history and traditional territory of the region. This acknowledgment reflects the company's commitment to respecting and honoring the cultural heritage of the Blackfoot Confederacy and other First Nations communities[5].
