The **SeaChange Marine Conservation Society** is a Canadian nonprofit organization focused on marine conservation and coastal ecosystem restoration. Founded in 1998 by Nikki Wright and Sarah Verstegen, the organization works to mitigate human and climate-related impacts on coastal environments through research, habitat restoration, and community engagement.
### History
Established with an initial focus on eelgrass transplantation in SṈIDȻEȽ (Tod Inlet, British Columbia), SeaChange expanded its efforts over two decades to include large-scale ecological restoration projects across the Salish Sea. In 2022, it acquired the ShoreZone program, a habitat mapping system developed in 1979, to enhance nearshore conservation planning. ShoreZone’s database includes mapped coastlines of British Columbia, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and parts of the eastern United States.
### Projects
- **Eelgrass Restoration**: Beginning with 1,800 shoots transplanted in 2000, SeaChange has restored critical eelgrass habitats, which serve as nurseries for marine species and stabilize shorelines.
- **ShoreZone**: The program provides publicly accessible maps and data supporting oil spill response, habitat conservation, and coastal management.
- **Marine Debris Cleanups**: Initiatives such as underwater debris removal in Cadboro Bay (2024) target pollution affecting marine ecosystems.
### Approach
The organization emphasizes community participation, collaborating with volunteers, Indigenous groups, and government agencies to restore native vegetation and eelgrass beds. Its work integrates scientific research with hands-on restoration, aiming to balance ecological health and human activity in coastal regions.
