Nakai Theatre Ensemble
Nakai Theatre Ensemble is a Canadian nonprofit organization located in Whitehorse, Yukon. It is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under the Business Registration Number 133955039RR0001.
Background and History
Nakai Theatre Ensemble has its roots in the formation of Nakai Players in 1979 by Sheila Langston and Beth Mulloy. Initially, it was a touring company focused on nurturing First Nations voices and promoting theatre within the Yukon region. Over the years, Nakai Theatre has been instrumental in amplifying less heard voices, including those of First Nations people, women, and individuals influenced by the northern landscape.
Artistic Contributions
Nakai Theatre Ensemble has produced a variety of theatrical works that highlight diverse perspectives. Notable productions include Last Rites by Leslie Hamson, The Fasting Girl by Miche Genest, and Sixty Below by Patti Flather and Leonard Linklater, which received seven Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations. The theatre company has also showcased performances by the comedic duo Sara and Susie (Jackie Williams and Sharon Shorty).
Funding and Challenges
In the past, Nakai Theatre faced challenges due to budget reductions and changes in funding policies by the Canada Council. Despite these challenges, it remained a leading force in Yukon theatre, becoming the first theatre company in the region to receive a project grant in 1985.
Revitalization and Current Activities
To revitalize the organization, Jacob Zimmer was appointed as Artistic Director in mid-2017, joining Kaori Torigai, who had been serving as General Manager since late 2016. This change aimed to re-establish Nakai Theatre as a significant force in northern theatre. The ensemble continues to create and support unique theatrical productions that reflect the Yukon's distinct landscape and culture. It also hosts the annual Pivot Festival, which takes place every January and features new works by local artists.
Community Engagement
Nakai Theatre Ensemble engages with the community through theatrical productions and workshops for both actors and writers. Its work emphasizes the development of local talent and the exploration of themes relevant to the Yukon and broader Canadian contexts.
Current Directions
Today, Nakai Theatre Ensemble continues to focus on creating theatre that is deeply rooted in and reflective of the Yukon environment. It emphasizes new works, diverse storytelling, and community involvement, maintaining its position as a vital part of Yukon's cultural landscape.
