Strong Start Charitable Organization
Strong Start Charitable Organization is a registered Canadian charity focused on early childhood literacy development. Established to address gaps in foundational reading skills, the organization operates through community partnerships to deliver targeted programs for children aged 6 months to 9 years. Its mission centers on providing interventions to prevent literacy challenges before children fall behind academically.
Programs
The organization offers three core initiatives:
- Letters, Sounds and Words™: A 10-week school-based program pairing children in Senior Kindergarten through Grade 2 with trained volunteers. Participants engage in structured activities to improve letter recognition, phonetics, sight-word identification, and word-building skills.
- Get Ready for School™: A preparatory program designed to equip preschool-aged children with essential literacy and social competencies before kindergarten entry.
- Family Literacy Support: Resources and workshops to help caregivers foster reading habits at home, complementing classroom and volunteer-led interventions.
Impact
Since its inception, Strong Start has supported over 60,000 children, with approximately 5,000 children annually benefiting from its programs. The charity collaborates with educators, schools, and 3,000+ volunteers to deliver services across Ontario. Its model emphasizes early intervention to reduce long-term educational disparities.
Funding and Operations
As a registered charity (Business No. 825948060RR0001), Strong Start relies on corporate sponsorships, individual donations, and community grants. Donations fund program materials, volunteer training, and outreach efforts. The organization prioritizes partnerships with school boards and community centers to maximize accessibility.
Vision
The charity’s vision—“All children read”—reflects its commitment to universal literacy as a pathway to academic success and community well-being. By addressing skill gaps during critical developmental stages, Strong Start aims to bolster lifelong learning trajectories.
